James is a trombonist and composer based in Melbourne. He is a member of The Australian Art Orchestra, The Eugene Ball Quartet, The Aaron Choulai Quintet, Akihirio Nishiguchi’s Fotos Quintet, Akiyoshi Shimizu Quintet, John Scurry’s Reverse Swing, and The Lagerphones.  He is in demand in Melbourne’s contemporary scene as a leader, arranger, soloist and collaborator.

James was awarded the “Sir Zelman Cowan School of Music Jazz Prize” (Composition Award) in 2012 at Monash University.  James completed Honours in 2013, studying complex rhythms with Scott Tinkler and writing about the Hoodangers and their unique place in the continuum of the Melbourne trad scene.

James won the National Jazz Award at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival in 2017.
